I don't have a lot of info on this due to the elections madness overpowering any other news... Anyone to share insights and what's happening?
The pipeline runs through several states, primarily in Native American reservations. There are concerns about the pipeline potentially contaminating the water that the Native American communities rely on and also that the pipeline will disrupt cultural sites.I personally think the benefits of the pipeline to all Americans outweighs the very low risk of contamination. This could dramatically decrease America's reliance on foreign oil which is a huge deal. The pipeline also won't even run directly through the Sioux reservation!
If that;s the case then why so much noise about it? Contamination and maintenance of cultural heritage are hugely important matters so for sure concerns need to be taken into consideration. Let alone the fact that there is not so much left for Native Americans in this country. I understand that the potential economic upside is considerable but countries are not corporates so profit should not be the major driver for this type of decisions.
"I personally think the benefits of the pipeline to all Americans outweighs the very low risk of contamination. "Low? These pipes break all the time.
We can find oil another way. It is 2016, we don't have to do this sh*t anymore. We owe the Native American population at least that much.
The pipeline doesn't cross the reservation, so how is it a crime against the Native community? I understand environmental concerns and such, and I'm certainly not a huge supporter of oil, but this strikes me as attacking the wrong issues.
A leaking pipeline will affect the land that belongs to the Sioux. Is is sacred, culturally significant land and the pipeline can contaminate it. The pipeline would also disturb an old burial ground that belongs to the tribe.
