@ericleatherwood What topic? I am ready now!
@citizenthom had a lot of fun. Thanks!
@julian Ditto! I'll be posting an analysis in just a sec to demonstrate some of the techniques we applied to this (allegedly silly) debate. I'd like it if you did the same.
@citizenthom No problem.
@alot_like_locke Thanks for the comment. To clarify, I believe that in a longer format, the temptation would be for a debate like this to devolve into a referendum on the less-accepted sport--here, of course, pro wrestling. The same is true in many debates where one side or the other is up against a preconceived audience AND PERSONAL bias. That's why I believe this particular topic is a proper test of the short format for forcing one to stick primarily to argument-building.As a lawyer, though, I generally disagree with the premise that debate is 50/50 between building up and tearing down. While tearing down may be a key feature of the unburdened side's argument in law (the defense, whether civil or criminal), Qallout's explicit dual-burden demands both sides make a positive case. This of course does not always actually occur, but it does seem to be the proper goal of the current rules (by which I mean the tournament rules).
@julian Pronounced same as "Tom" BTW :)
@julian Your reference to ballet was interesting, BTW, because I set up a Community Debate a while back comparing pro wrestling to ballet. Wrestling has been called "ballet with body slams" WITHIN the business for a long time, to emphasize to competitors the importance of storytelling with the body as an element of the contest. I think that's more a discussion topic than a debate topic.Thanks again for being the first guinea pig!
@citizenthom now I know. Sorry!
@citizenthom my pleasure!
@citizenthom Damn I've been doing the same mistake.. :-(. Sorry Tom!!
This has to be the funniest debate argument subject ever. lol
