    @mhoover @lewisoflime Great debate guys!

For Quarter Finals onwards winner will be determined as the best of 5 (community votes + 2 judges). Your confirmed judges so far: @wylie_l @vkate

@wylie_l Just for the sake of clarification, if I had pointed out more clearly that while trump "caused" some divisiveness because he created the original comment, the liberal media "caused" more divisiveness because they created scores and scores of original comments during their commentary and news coverage, would this have impacted your vote? I ask out of interest of giving judges what they are looking for in future debates, not in an attempt to change your vote.

@mhoover Yes that would have influenced my vote greatly. I thought you were so close to cementing your argument, did an amazing job of countering his claims and analogies, you just did not mention that media caused more divisiveness but instead your claim was that they amplified Trump's rhetoric which was made his speeches more divisive than he did. I wanted you to prove that the media, by only adding clips of speeches rather than the whole thing, are creating divisiveness instead of amplifying the divisiveness that Trump causes

@vkate Thanks for your feedback! I wanted to have more evidence too - I had misread my schedule and thus had to do the round on about 5 minutes notice. (Totally my fault, and my opponent was super patient waiting for me to drive home to start). That being said, I think the debate could have been a lot better had I gotten in research.

@lewisoflime It’s understandable and life happens! You both argued well and respectfully, which is extremely valuable to me as I judge these debates. Good luck going forward!

@lewisoflime Congrats for advancing to the Semi-Finals! Please expect details on your next debate this weekend.

@mhoover Great job reaching so far in the tournament and getting a free pass for Dec' $5,000 Championship! More practice in Nov? :-)

Redefining the resolution? Trump is divisive, media is divisive, but trump + media = MORE divisive as a result!

@dhumberd Grammar: X is more divisive than Y is a comparison between two things - not a question of if together, they produce something.

IE 5 is bigger than 9. You would not say adding 9 not 5 makes 5 bigger, therefore the statement is true. You must compare the two and examine which on its own is bigger.

That's my opinion - I don't think the resolution is asking if the media can possibly increase division. I think it's asking which of the two is more divisive.

@lewisoflime if someone throws a five point weight at you or a nine pound weight, which one is going to do more damage?

                    The nine pound weight.

Rhetoric alone vs Rhetoric and negative spin, which is more divisive?

@mhoover I agree! My argument was that Trump is the 9 :)

                    @lewisoflime interesting math. Lol

@mhoover (just read your edited comment) of course rhetoric + media analysis is more than just rhetoric. that's obvious.

my claim is that the resolution is asking a different question than you're trying to answer. you're attempting to show how the addition of two things creates a bigger effect.

the resolution compares which of two things ARE more divisive: not if their sum is divisive.

IE: "Trump's rhetoric with the media's analysis is more divisive than trump's rhetoric alone" is different from our res: "the liberal media is more divisive than trump".

Take literally any other comparison. Lebron > Kobe. 7 > 12. Cardio > weight training.

Adding these two together and talking about the outcome doesn't prove anything, because the resolutions are asking which of the two is (greater, larger, etc.)

Again: this is just my opinion. You're of course entitled to your own interpretation of the resolution.

if that is the way you interprete it, then it seems you would have to concede that the fact that the liberal media is more divisive because it broadcasts divisive opinions on numerous divisive topics unrelated to trump as well as all of trumps divisive rhetoric.

I made that point, so maybe everyone will agree with us :)

Thank you for the debate. I enjoyed it.

I understand you - this was the flashlight response. That reporting on controversy is very different from creating controversy.

                    I enjoyed it too!

@lewisoflime as much as we might like it to, the liberal media cannot be considered mutually exclusive from Trump... by its very nature the media feeds on Trump’s rhetoric then spits it back out to the public with biased analysis added to the mix, creating further division. For example, Trump tweets something disgusting, then CNN picks up that tweet and displays it over and over again with contributors explaining how and why it’s disgusting ad nauseum.

Regardless of your grammatical semantics, the “liberal media” causes far more divisiveness than Trump does alone.

@dhumberd i understand your opinion! Thanks for your feedback.

Con's Burdens on the Pro were pretty strong and effectively turned the case towards his side. while Pro did show there was some change by the media, that he failed to satisfy Cons burdens placed, that the sudden change in divisiveness was significantly because of the media. imho

@lewisoflime the suspense is killing me lol

Reading should be limited on here. The first 3 minutes was the pro reading. But he is right. Trump says 5 words, the media covers those 5 words for an entire day putting their twist on it. For petes sake they were covering what he drinks while a shooting was taking place.
