In case you doubt that we in America are, frankly, stupid when it comes to the intersection of politics and food, never forget that a major television news network in this country tried to make President Obama's preferences in MUSTARD an issue. **MUSTARD!**I only wish I was kidding. Don't take my word for it, Google it. It is just such a bizarre chapter in the Right Wing media's war on Obama that I don't blame people who reflexively think I made it up, or that I mistook a story from The Onion for reality.Additionally, food bullying is a thing here. Does any other country have to deal with this crap? Why is food bullying a thing that exists? Why?!https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/15/well/family/in-allergy-bullying-food-can-hurt.html
@arkle In today's example of "don't let your overwhelming partisanship blind you from the fact that the exact same thing happens just as commonly from the left to the right."a. https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/food/trumps-first-dc-dinner-as-president-an-overcooked-54-steak-with-ketchup/2017/02/27/c98895b4-fd19-11e6-8f41-ea6ed597e4ca_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.eba862321995b. https://www.gq.com/story/trump-dining-opinionc. http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-obama-exercise-diet-2018-4d. https://www.huffingtonpost.com.au/2017/07/30/trump-isnt-elite-because-he-eats-pizza-these-photos-say-othe_a_23056249/e. https://www.cnn.com/2017/12/08/health/trump-diet-unhealthy/index.htmlf. https://www.cnn.com/videos/health/2018/05/30/donald-trump-diet-fitness-regimen-collins-ip.cnn/video/playlists/donald-trump-health/g. https://www.elitedaily.com/social-news/people-cant-stop-making-fun-trump-eating-kfc-fork-knife/1570762
@sharkb8 Except none of those links imply Trump is "Unamerican" or makes implications about his sexuality or "manhood" or anything like So it's not really the same at all, once you look beyond the most superficial surface level of it.I mean, it wasn't the left that coined the terms "Latte liberal" or "soyboy." The Left makes fun of Trump for eating junk food while claiming to be super healthy, but the Right calls Michelle Obama a fascist for suggesting school lunches include more vegetables and mock President Obama for buying arugula. The Right will literally drink unpasteurized milk (https://www.msnbc.com/way-too-early/watch/lawmakers-celebrate-raw-milk-bill-641196099908), making themselves sick, to "own the libs." There really is no equivalent to that on the Left, 'cause, you know, wanting our food to be safe is kinda our thing (or as Libertarians call it, "tyranny"). I would also remind you that no Left Wing Presidential candidate has ever included removing gluten-free options from military MREs as part of their platform. Because nothing says "I support the troops" by promising to give about 1% of them the running shits just to score cheap political points with the dumbest motherf***ers in the Red States. http://time.com/4225884/ted-cruz-military-gluten-free-meals/ Good thing he didn't win, huh?
@arkle But the thing is, Hannity is a blowhard who was just making a dog whistle to any of his right wing followers who will jump at any opportunity to criticize Obama, regardless of if it was logical or not.And the exact same thing is true of criticisms of Trump. Obviously there are a lot of legitimate criticisms of Trump, but to criticize him for eating steak with ketchup, for liking fast food, for eating chicken with a knife, or to make fun of his weight and exercise is another intentional dog whistle to people who already dislike Trump. These are irrelevant, meaningless criticisms that are just supposed to let the people who already dislike the man be able to fill up their "outrage meter" for the day. When Hannity and Fox News criticize Obama or people on the left, they're just providing red meat for their followers to fill up on their daily dose of outrage. When Huffington Post or CNN or GQ or any of the others do it to Trump, they're also providing red meat for their followers to fill up on their daily dose of outrage. It's the same thing. And they might use different words to help their followers do it, because the words they use are meant to rile up their respective supporters. Fox News and Breitbart will intentionally appeal to God, to Patriotism, to the flag, and to red blooded manliness. Occupy Democrats or Huffington Post will intentionally appeal to minority status, to abuse and to systems that hold the individual down. Both sides are trying to accomplish the same thing. They're entertainment. They present what they pretend is "news" in a way that will rile up their audience and keep that audience coming back for more. That way they make money. If you want to criticize a corporate media, I'm totally on board with you. It's a flawed system. But the corporate media goes both toward the right and the left, and is entirely based on appealing to their demographic base. The right leaning sources and the left leaning sources use the same exact tactics for the same exact reasons.
I chock this sort of thing up to "Some people are incredibly foolish." I agree that it is incredibly idiotic, but it doesn't "need to end." We can survive and thrive despite some level of absurd stupidity.
